Confining lithium meta1 (LM) in 3D 1ithiophilic current collectors (3DLCCs) isan effective strategy to suppress lithium dendrites growth and infnite volume changeof LM, which is most critical to achieve utrastability of lithium metal batteries(LMBs).During Li deposition,3DLCCs can generate solid electrolyte interface(SEDcomponents in situ through chemical reactions between lithiophilic materials and Li,which have profound effects on subsequent Li plating stripping. Nevertheless, themechanism on how the characteristics of the 1lithiophilic materials on the 3DLCCimpact on SEI formation, although critical for the success of LMBs,is rarely studiedand remains unclear. Herein, a simple and an uftrafast solution combustion method isdeveloped to fabricate a series of metal oxide based 3DLCCs, from which formationof a unifom and stable lithium dendrite-free solid electrolyte interface enabled by auniform lithiophilic metal oxide layer is demonstrated. This work not only providesnew and valuable insights into the interfacial chemistry of solid electrolyte interfacelayers, but also sheds light on the development of ultrastable LM batteries.Thefollowing five aspects of this manuscript will make it interesting to general readers.
1. Lithiophilic metal oxides modified 3D current collectors are prepared through asimple and an ultrafast (in seconds) sotution combustion method, which is scalable for
large scale applications.
2. Mechanisms of regulating the composite Li anode nterfaces through tuning theuniformity of lithiophilic metal oxide layers are systematically studied.
3.Although lithiophilic materials can reduce the nucleation overpotential and helpguide uniform Li plating stripping excess or insufficient loading of the lithiophilicmaterials will lead to undesirable side reactions, SEI of low ionic conductivities, highactivation energies for Li* diffusion, and low SEI stability,which can significantlyshorten the lifespan of the LMB.
4.Taking Coz0: as a proof of concept study, at optimal Co;0 loading, thus a uniformCo;0s layer, the Co;Osmodified nickel foam based composite Li anode achieves adesirable Li* adsorption energy of -4.14 eV, a stable SEI,and a low Li* diffusionactivation energy of 17.65 Kmof-1. Outstanding half-cell, symmetric cell, andfull-cell performances are acquired.
5.This study establishes a considerable milestone for the understanding of the SEIformation mechanism on 3DLCCs and its effects on relevant electrochemicalperformances of the electrode
