Technology pioneer Apple announced on Monday that the company had partnered with music company EMI to sell that firm's library of songs through its iTunes service without any digital-rights management (DRM) software in place.
The songs will be encoded at a higher quality than Apple's standard music files and cost a $1.29 per track, a 30 percent premium over the iTunes service's normal fare. Apple will also offer customers a one-click upgrade for any EMI songs previously bought from iTunes, at $0.30 a song. EMI's record labels include Angel, Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol, Capitol Nashville, EMI Classics, EMI CMG, EMI Records, EMI Televisa Music, Manhattan, Mute, Parlophone and Virgin, according to the company's Web site.
“We think our customers are going to love this, and we expect to offer more than half of the songs on iTunes in DRM-free versions by the end of this year," Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement.
The momentum behind nixing the security of digital music sold online came quickly. The deal between Apple and EMI comes less than two months after Jobs called for an end to digital-rights management protections on music files. The request, which came in an essay published on Apple's Web site, followed mounting criticism from the European Union and other lawmakers of Apple's dominance in the music player and services market. A week after the essay was published, other music services had echoed the request and rumors of EMI's talks with Apple surfaced.
Apple will encode the DRM-free music at 256-kbps in the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format, the standard used by Apple for both iTunes and QuickTime. Music sold by the iTunes store with DRM is encoded with 128-kbps AAC.
